Board of Commissioners
Alexander County Housing Authority does not have a local Board of Commissioners at this time. The HUD Recovery Administrators currently act as the Board of Commissioners. The HUD Recovery Administrators oversee the operations and management of the Housing Authority. Board meetings are held once a month (the fourth Wednesday of each month) at 2:00 p.m. at the main office located at 1100 Halliday Ave., Cairo, IL 62914.

How do I apply?
There are three ways to apply for housing at Alexander County Housing Authority:- Visit our office located at 1100 Halliday Ave., Cairo, Illinois.
- Call us at (618)734-1910 and request that we mail an application to you.

How many wait lists does ACHA have?
We have one wait list for the public housing program. The public housing program is available for all to apply. -
How long will I have to wait to be housed?
Usually, the wait time for housing in Alexander County can be more than a year. Our turnover rate is not very high and our wait list is long. However, we encourage everyone to apply and be placed on the wait list.

Does your housing authority have a Section 8 program, or a Housing Choice Voucher program?
No. We only have the Low-Income Public Housing program. -
Can I have a pet?
Yes. It must be a service animal or support animal and you must fill out a Pet Application, pay a pet deposit, and abide by the terms of our Pet Policy. -
How much will my rent be?
Rent is charged based on your income. At the time of admission, you will choose whether to pay Income Based Rent or Flat Rent. We will assess your household situation and determine if you qualify for any deductions and/or exemptions. We do offer medical deductions for elderly/disabled families and a childcare deduction for working families or families furthering their education.
